Question : What is the meaning behind Diego Rivera's Flower Day art painting?
I know there is some iconography and meaning to the painting, but I just cant figure it out. WHat do the flowers mean? who is the woman carrying the flowers? Who are the people on their knees? What does everything mean?I know it conveys a message about the Mexican Revolution which had occured recently but what about it does it say?

Answer #1 Diego Rivera loved to portray the heritage of the Mexican people in their common
lives and labor, the girl is a flower vendor selling "Calla Lilly's". Diego
Riveras wife and passion was Frieda Kahlo, a Mexican woman artist with fame to
equal and some say surpass Rivera himself. The Calla Lilly is a sensual flower
that is "self fruiting" I believe it represents the female genitalia, but more
importantly it represents Frieda even though she is not present in body in the
picture, Frieda was multi faceted and bi sexual and I believe this is why the
beautiful Calla Lilly bears so much reference in his works. This is due to
researching the lives of both Diego Rivera and Frieda Kahlo. Hope that helps! - answered by Sue B
