Question: Orchids How to keep them alive?

Question : Orchids How to keep them alive?
I received two beautiful orchid plants in July. The flowers were beautiful till a week ago they fell off. The plant is thriving and I have fed it. The stems the flowers were on are still green. Do I cut them. They are in a very sunny lighted window. Buy seriously howmany bright days do we get in North Jersey in the winter. Do I need a grow light. I am very good with plants but I have no experience with orchids. Thank You

It may be difficult to get it to flower in your area. I tried to grow orchids in Ohio with a grow light and bright window. Moved to Florida, put the plants under a bush. Forgot about them, a few months later walked around the yard and they where in bloom. I now grow orchids in the back yard under the trees. I ever feed, never water, let nature take care of them. They bloom all the time. So- keep the humidity high, water in the summer, dry in the winter. But NO standing water. Orchids grow with exposed roots and fast draining. Feed with weak fertilizer in summer may be once a month. No feeding in the winter. good luck.

There are a lot of different kinds of orchids, and each has its own care requirements. The American Orchid Society has culture sheets for many of the most common varieties.

http://www.orchidweb.org/aos/orchids/page01.aspxI'd bet you have a Phalaenopsis; check the picture to see if it looks like yours...If the stems are green, you can leave them. I usually cut them once they turn brown.
